About
Terence Kuaru
In 1986, he commenced study at the University of Papua New Guinea, graduating in 1991. While studying, Kuaru worked with clinical departments of ANGAU Memorial Hospital in Lae as a Clinical HEO.
In 1992 Kuaru studied with Dr Murray Dyck to complete Honours in Clinical Psychology. He obtained a BAH and went on to work as a teaching fellow at UPNG in the School of Philosophy and Psychology. He then went into a teaching position at the Paramedical College in Madang in April 1993, and remained in that role until 2005.
In mid 2005, Kuaru moved out of the university sector and back into clinical practice. He worked as a Psychotherapist (Clinical Psychologist) at Modilon General Hospital in Madang. He would see clients and obtain their histories, conduct physical and mental health assessments, and prescribe a treatment. When patients were stable, he would start using an eclectic method of cognitive, behavioural, existential and logo therapies. These, he found, were the best practice for the Papua New Guinean context.
Kuaru identified a need for greater mental health support in Papua New Guinea. It is time to break down the stigma around mental health, and talk about the difficulties everyone faces and work as a community to overcome them. Kuaru is sure that there can be change, and he will be one of the people who opens the discussions. He is opening a clinic in Madang, where anyone who is concerned for themselves or a loved one can walk in and have a chat, and start meeting with Kuaru on a regular basis.
